With the release of THE STRANGE CASE OF…, I fell in love with Lzzy Hale. So much so, in fact, that I jokingly got down on one knee and asked her to marry me at Rock On The Range two years ago (a proposal that she didn’t flat out turn down, so maybe there’s still hope!!). Let’s be

MACHINE FUCKING HEAD LIVE

Machine Head is one of the most intense live metal acts out there today. To me, they have filled the void that was vacated by Pantera's demise and the softening of Metallica as a live act. While this band is the single most plagued band on the planet healthwise, when they do hit the stage they are as intense an experience as you can ever witness. Additionally, they have a catalog that has a lot of brilliance in it, and for the most part they pull primarily from the better stuff when they take to the live stage.

Machine Head put out a live album called SUPERCHARGER LIVE a decade ago, and it was simply not good. It wasn't good for a lot of reasons, but the biggest reason to me was that it just didn't capture the raw energy that I've come to expect from seeing this band live. With MACHINE FUCKING HEAD LIVE, they did it right. Aside from being perfectly recorded, this feels as if there are zero touchups on it. The material is just raw like a cheese grater across your forearm - untampered with so as to present EXACTLY what the live experience is truly like. It works. The raw ferocity of songs like "Ten Ton Hammer" just hit you in the face like...well...a ten ton hammer! Vocalist Robb Flynn barks out lyrics throughout while commanding the audience to be crazier than the music they are presenting. Songs like "Imperium" are just ferocious, with Flynn clearly blown away by the energy coming off the audience. Flynn and guitarist Phil Demmel rage throughout. Demmel's guitar lines are just piercing, specifically on songs like "Beautiful Mourning" and "The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears". They provide all the rage they can over the punishing bottom end created by bassist Adam Duce and drummer Dave McClain. Maybe it's just me, but Machine Head has a truly distinct sound that's undeniably their own. They carry it perfectly to the live stage; so much so that the songs are improved by being live.

PITRIFF RATING - 91/100 - Listening to this just makes me hope for another live date near me soon. MACHINE FUCKING HEAD LIVE is just a real-world look inside a band that's one of the most ferocious live acts on the planet today. Great listen from a great band!
