I tell this story often, but it's one of my favorites of the past year. I had the chance to interview the Texas Hippie Coalition earlier this year at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio. I was in a small tent with a bunch of photographers. The tent was fairly quiet really, as the much bigger adjacent

I get it. You are Sammy Hagar. You've seen huge success in virtually every world you've entered. In music, he was the main focus of Montrose. He parlayed that into a very successful solo career. That wasn't enough, so he joined the world's largest band at the time (Van Halen), and took them to commercial heights that even they

There's always good news and bad news whenever Max Cavalera gets busy with new music. The good is that you get a whole lot of new music, seemingly all in a very short time. The bad news is it's generally spotty at best, because he simply writes and releases too much music at the same time. His band Soulfly released

With a ton of speculation and even more wonderment on this band's ability to continue on without founding members Paul Gray and Joey Jordison, Slipknot has returned after far too long of a layoff with .5 THE GRAY MATTER. I've listened to this release multiple times a day for the last week or so that I've had it,

Opeth simply fails as a band, at least to me. While I'll admit to never fully understanding the amazement and awe so many have for this band, I've appreciated them from afar. I've listened, and I've at least wrapped my head around what they were trying to do. Their fusing of death metal with progressive elements always made for an

So really, what does anyone expect when you get a Cannibal Corpse release handed to you? Ballads, love songs and fun? Not hardly. There's an expectation of severe brutality which the band delivers time and time again. Certainly, it comes with different levels of acceptance to one's ears, but ultimately the only thing that matters if it says

Unless you call Testament a "thrash band" (which I don't personally), Exodus would rank as my favorite true Thrash band of all time. They have had good times and bad. Occasionally, like on FABULOUS DISASTER, they have misstepped along the way. But overall, they are one of the true powerhouses in the history of thrash metal. Since 2004

As a fan of Mr. Big, I can't honestly say that many people thought that their reunion was much more than a cash grab opportunity for the guys in the band who, while immensely talented, failed to find solo success to match their collaborative efforts. It was never a question of if they could still play.

Kyler - SWAGGER

SWAGGER

Kyler is a band that I really know NOTHING about. By nothing, I mean that I can find almost nothing at all about them online, so even a quick run through Google didn't help to figure out just what makes this band tick. So, in many ways, this review has to be old school and based solely on old school habits. In short, this band HAS to be reviewed solely based on what I hear in my ears. Fair enough!

Kyler's SWAGGER is a band that reminds me of a lot of great influences from other bands that I enjoy a great deal. Throughout any given song, influences of bands like Pantera and Lamb Of God come screaming through. At other times, you feel a kinship with modern bands like Texas Hippie Coalition. SWAGGER is full of giant guitars, monsterous riffs, gutteral vocals that are clean enough to understand, and a hodge podge of traditional thrash and metalcore stylings that just plain works.

33 LOVE CHILD

So many times, new bands get all wrapped up trying to reinvent the musical wheel so much that they forget to actually showcase the core influences that made them what they are in the first place. 33 Love Child is a band that features vocalist Whiskey Diamond, who many metalheads might remember as the vocalist behind ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman's solo material some years ago. That said, he's brought his strong voice together with some qualified musicians to create an album chock full of material that doesn't really break any new musical ground, but just kicks ass because of one simple reason - it rocks.

CD Review - Black Veil Brides

WRETCHED AND DIVINE

The Black Veil Brides have certainly come from out of nowhere to capture the Hot Topic community of modern metalheads. There's no denying their success. Ultimately, they are a fairly average band, even if they make efforts to fuse both modern elements and some old school into their music to create what I'll call "hybrid rock". They blew up with SET THE WORLD ON FIRE, and their REBELS EP was well received as well. That said though, the band is clearly at a crossroads for their career where they can emerge as superstars or fall back to the pack. Or, after listening to WRETCHED AND DIVINE, they can probably stay exactly where they are.

ALL OUT WAR

Any time you put the "Cavalera" name on a project, I'm always going to be willing to give it a chance. Sure, I know that this is not Max or Igor Cavalera, but it's still a Cavalera, and metal with that name on it has yet to truly disappoint me. Max Cavalera's son Richie has emerged with the band Incite - a band that's been given every break the Cavalera tree can give it in order to gain some traction in the underground world. While I'm yet to see any real buzz come of that, it's very clear that growing up as part of the Cav Clan has shown young Richie just what it takes to create powerful modern extreme metal. ALL OUT WAR is a solid collection of tunes, and a good sophomore effort for a band that's going to have to overcome the stigma of association with a metal legend in order to make their own mark. So far, so good.

In Alcatraz 1962 - THE DRIVE

THE DRIVE

Standby Records is one of those labels putting out modern metal where they are pretty much hit or miss with me. They have put out some bands like Hopes Die Last, Modern Day Escape and Davey Suicide who's music I have completely dug. Then again, there are other bands like Blessed By A Burden or Emergency 911 that have just sucked balls. With that label, there really is no middle ground. Add In Alcatraz 1962 to the "completely dug" list. THE DRIVE is a fairly simple, extremely punishing and yet sonically excellent dose of hammer smashes to the face. Without question, THE DRIVE is one of those releases that leaves me thinking there is hope for the next generation of metal bands.
