More than any other metal band in history, being a hardcore Megadeth fan is truly a rollercoaster ride. This is a band with multiple duds in their catalog, and yet they always seem to rebound. Think about it, they’ve truly had some bad releases in their catalog. RISK was terrible. THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO wasn’t a lot better. And yet,

Depending on your perspective, Anthrax is either having a career resurgence or floundering at the end of their career. I’m stunned how many people actually didn’t like their last effort, FOR ALL KINGS. In these ears, that was the best effort of their career. What made it great, to me, was the mixture of crushing heaviness combined with some

When I first saw Sevendust’s new release was titled KILL THE FLAW, my initial thought was “what exactly is the flaw?” It leads you to wonder just what it is that caused this band to not break big, while bands with lesser quality catalogs like Disturbed or Korn had such crazy amounts of success at the same time. This

Probably more than any release in their history, Slayer came into releasing this album at a crossroads. This WAS the album that, in many ways, dictated if the band could continue on or if it was indeed time to drift off quietly to Hell. The loss of guitarist Jeff Hanneman and the removal of drummer Dave Lombardo had almost every Slayer

Geoff Tate’s falling out and subsequent two years of lawsuits, multiple versions of the same band and overall craziness in the press definitely tarnished a legacy that once seemed untouchable. Think about it. Even with over a decade of arguably bad releases (Q2K, TRIBE, AMERICAN SOLDIER, DEDICATED TO CHAOS), it wasn’t until the now infamous spitting incident and the

They don’t do it that often anymore, but there’s always excitement when Iron Maiden comes out with new music. Knowing that they are closing in on the end of their career, you really do end up hoping that when they go out for good, it will be with a bang. I think it’s universally agreed upon that THE FINAL FRONTIER would NOT have been that bang at all, but more of a generic whimper from a band that is capable of so much more. With a lot of hype (generated mostly by the band themselves), THE BOOK OF SOULS comes forth. It’s a LOT of listening to say the least - 2 discs, multiple songs over 10 minutes long, and a ton of nuances to swallow before you can truly form an opinion on it. It’s a daring project for Iron Maiden, especially at a time when it’s destined to be little more than a vehicle that gives them a reason to tour the world once again.

Doing THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, we get shit on repeatedly anytime we say anything that is less than glowing about W.A.S.P., Blackie Lawless or any of the band’s former or present members. Oh well...comes with the territory, I guess. After what seems like quite a long wait (almost 6 years), Blackie Lawless and company return with GOLGOTHA; an album that continues the tradition started by DOMINATOR and BABYLON of integrating less shock and more of the biblical epiphany Lawless has welcomed into his life into the messages of new music.  To be honest, that is not really a problem to me, personally. As someone that truly finds the bible fascinating, I like introspective takes on biblical topics in movies and in music.

Lynch Mob - SUN RED SUN

On THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, George Lynch is regularly a topic of conversation. Maybe that has to do with the fact that Neeley is a personal friend of Don Dokken and I work for Don on his website, but I like to believe that he becomes a topic because, first and foremost, we are big fans of the guy's work...sometimes. When George Lynch is being the George Lynch of old, he falls into that untouchable place that's reserved for only the smallest list of amazing guitar players. I'll give him credit for consistently trying new things, but won't lie and say that things like Souls Of We or Microdot have been very appealing. When he straps it on and unleashes his brand of driving hard melodic rock, he's as good as it gets.

I'm sure I'm not in the minority here, but I'm glad that we now have a killer version of Accept with Mark Tornillo as well as the continuation of U.D.O. with Udo Dirkschneider. In short, it's led to both bands stepping up their game and creating great music. While neither side will admit competition with the other band, the fans certainly listen to each new release and compare it to what the other side is doing. Both sides have released new music in rapid fire fashion, and both have been at their creative best for several years now. It's a damn good thing as a fan.

Being completely honest here, I really didn't expect a whole lot out of this. I'm not the biggest Stryper fan in the world by a long shot, and the truth is that I just never could fully get into Michael Sweet's vocals. There's just always been something about him. I'm not sure what it is. I guess it's that he's a bit too "opera" for my taste, and he tends to really stretch all his words out a bit. Add into that George Lynch on guitar, and the thoughts of what this project could be was quite confusing. Lynch, as most know that follow along, is brilliant but troubled by the "artsy" bug where he tries far too often to expand his playing far outside of his brilliant ability within the scope of 80s sounding metal. Combining the two? This was not something I was holding my breath on, or even remotely interested in hearing to be honest. But when it came, it was very surpisingly good. In fact, it's REALLY good. I might even call it great. Again, "might".
